Father & Son 2018

Competition Information

All Ireland Father & Son 2018

Sunday 14th July 2018

Final day arrived and it all started with the sprinkle of drizzle as the long awaited rain arrived, as promised.

Vincent & Lloyd O'Rourke (Naas) got out of the blocks quite fast and birdied the 2nd to go one up and went two up on the 3rd with par.

Michael & Stephen Finlan (Grange Castle/Castle) won the 4th with a fine birdie to peg them back one and followed it up by winning the 4th, to tie the match.

A par on the 7th was enough to see the Finlans step ahead in the match for the first time. They won the 8th and 9th to turn 3 up.

The 10th was halved, but the Finlans pressed further ahead on the 11th with a winning putt.

Great support started to gather from Naas Golf Club for the O'Rourkes and they responded well by taking the 12th with a superb birdie.

The Finlans drew a great response from the Castle supporters as they took the 13th to go back to 4 up.

The O'Rourkes tried hard to fight back and won the 14th with another birdie.

The match ended on the 15th green as the Finlans rolled in their putt to win 4 & 3.

Michael Finlan has now won the Dawson Jewellers sponsored Castle All Ireland Father & Son for a record 5th time, while Stephen has now won it four times - simply a magnificent achievement.

Vincent & Lloyd O'Rourke contributed greatly to a final watched by a large crowd and played in a terrific sporting spirit.

Many thanks to all the players from the many clubs around Ireland who have participated in the 2018 All Ireland Father & Son, sponsored by Dawson Jewellers.

Many thanks also to Lee Healion (Tournament Chairman) and his committee and all the volunteers and club staff, who have greatly assisted the smooth running of this top class event.

Congratulations to Michael & Stephen Finlan on being the 2018 All Ireland Father & Son Champions.

Saturday 14th July 2018

Semi Finals Day and the play started to the tune of the music blaring from Marley Park.

Andrew & Ryan Baird (Castle) got off to a fast start in their match with Vincent & Lloyd O'Rourke (Naas) and were two up at the turn. Support was great for both sides with a good following having arrived from Naas to encourage the fight back from the O'Rourke's, who finally drew level on 17.

A half on the 18th led the match up the 19th, where the O'Rourke's emerged as the winners. Great match !!

In the second semi final Michael & Steve Finlan (Blessington Lakes/Castle) also got off to a good start in their game with Morgan & Jack Pierse (Grange/Portmarnock) winning the first with a net birdie. The golf in this match was equally excellent, with the Finlans rarely leaving any door or window open for the Pierse's to take any opportunity to get ahead in the match. Each time the Pierse's got one back the Finlans stepped on the gas again at the next hole. Great matchplay golf.

Classy golf from the Finlans won through on the day, winning 4&3.

Both losing semi finalists can feel proud of their performances this week and hopefully will come back and win this title in the near future.

In the meantime, this year's final will be contested between the O'Rourkes (Naas), who have been great supporters of this competition for many years and the Finlans who have strong pedigree and know how to win.

A fascinating contest lies ahead.

Final will tee it up at 11.00 am tomorrow morning.

Why not come and enjoy some smashing matchplay golf.

Friday 13th July 2018

Friday the 13th and it certainly was not unlucky for anyone who came to Castle Golf Club to watch the golf - absolutely terrific golf and closely fought matches.

Brian & Martin Scullion (Lurgan) came from two down with three to play with birdies on 16 and 17 to tie the match and take it into tie holes. Steve & Michael Finlan (Grange Castle /Castle), who have won this title  three times together, came through as winners after an epic battle, winning on the 20th.

The Finlans will play Morgan & Jack Pierse (Grange/Portmarnock) who overcame David & David Marshall (Naas). The Marshalls were ahead for most of this match with the Pierses only pegging them back over the last few holes.

Castle's Andrew & Ryan Baird have made it into the semi finals after a fine win over Kevin & Caoimhin Murphy (Arklow/{Palmerstown House).

A match played with tremendous golf saw Vincent & Lloyd O'Rourke (Naas) also make it into the same semi final after their win on 17 against Matt & Kevin Maher (Blessington Lakes/Dunmurry Springs)

Saturday is semi final day - all supporters and visitors are most welcome - there will be some cracking matches and golf to watch and enjoy.

Thursday 12th July 2018

Another great night of top class golf at Castle tonight featured three matches finishing on the 18th green resulting in wins for past Champions the Finlans (Grange Castle/Castle) and also the Marshalls (Naas) and the Murphys (Arklow/Palmerstown House)

Morgan and Jack Pierse (Grange/Portmarnock) managed to see off the challenge of Castle pair, Dermot & Martin Connor.  Another Castle pair, Andrew & Ryan Baird won their match on the 17th after a great match with Peter & Graham O'Connor of Foxrock.

The late night excitement was provided by the Varians (Dun Laoghaire) and the Mahers (Blessington Lakes/Dunmurry Springs) with the Mahers finally closing out this match on the 20th hole.

Quarter Final Day tomorrow!

Wednesday 11th July 2018

Getting closer to the business side of the competition as today's matches proceeded through the second round.

The second hole in one of this year's event was achieved by Lloyd O'Rourke (Naas) as he and his father Vicent overcame Gerard & Neil Morrissey  (Foxrock).

Hilary & Arthur Haydon (Castle), one of four Castle pairings still left, kept the home flag flying, for another day at least, after a great match with Gerry & Harry Morgan (Donabate) played in a tremendous spirit with some excellent golf too!

John & Ross O'Grady (Milltown) played some fabulous golf to emerge as the victors over former winners James & Marc Dillon (Palmerstown House/Castle)

David & David Marshall (Naas) came through a tough match on the 19th, as they beat Castle's Martin & Mathew Donnelly.

Thursday will see the last 16 battling it out to see who can make it into the quarter finals.

Get down to Castle and you will enjoy some great golf.

Tuesday 10th July 2018

Great night's golf at Castle Golf Club as the first round matches were completed.

John Maguire (Foxrock) followed up his Sunday hole in one, holing out on 18, to lead his father Derek into the next round, in their match aginast Castle's John & Richard Jones.

Another tight match saw resulted in Brian & Gavin Whitaker (Elm Park/Milltown) edging out Michael & Mark Mahony (Grange).

The second round on Wednesday will start at 15.30 and promises to be a great day's golf with some mouth watering matches.
