Alex Gleeson (Castle Golf Club) has followed up his recent good form when finishing 5th in the South American Open, with an impressive 15 under par score to end up as leading Irish player in the South African Strokeplay Championship being played at Pecanwood Golf Estate.
Alex finished 13th overall in a top class star studded field with rounds of 72, 67, 64, 70, which included 20 birdies in all. The third round score of 64 was unblemished as he birdied the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh to go out in 32, then followed birdie fours at the 10th and 12th with the two more at the 16th and 17th for another 32 on the back nine.
Earlier this week, Alex moved into the top 200 amateur golf rankings in the world with a 197 ranking while also moving inside the top 50 European golfers with a 49th place ranking. His current performance in South Africa should see his star ranking improve even more.
Oliver Gillberg from Sweden, currently ranked 10th in World Amateur Golf, lived up to his star billing as he finished the overall winner of the South African Strokeplay Championship with a magnificent score of 27 under par for the week.
Next up for Alex and the Irish team is the African Amateur Championship at Glendower Golf Club.
